Washington
Park is a charming, distinctive old Denver neighborhood with
mature shade trees, quiet streets, and well-cared-for bungalow
style homes. "Wash Park" as it is fondly called,
offers excellent access to any major location in the city.
Built in 1899, the 162-acre Washington Park, with Smith
and Grasmere lakes each ending the long grassy meadow, is
a local recreational haven. The three-story red brick 1926
South High School, complete with griffins perched on its roof,
overlooks Washington Park from the southeast corner. From
I-25 to Cherry Creek and from University Boulevard to Downing
Street, the neighborhood is rich with entertainment, like
the cluster of small shops and restaurants on South Gaylord
and South Pearl Streets.
Because homes here tend to be smaller and more affordable,
many residents are young professionals in their 30s or 40s
or empty nesters who have moved back into the city from the
suburbs now that their children are grown. "Pop-top"
is another commonly heard term here, because "popping
the top" by adding a second story to the bungalow homes
has become quite a trend.
The residents tend toward friendliness and active concern
for and involvement in the community. At the center of the
neighborhood is a beautiful 161-acre park containing two large
lakes which are frequented by flocks of geese, tennis courts,
a boat-house, a rec center, flower gardens, picnic areas and
a playground. The rec center features a public pool, workout
area and basketball courts. From bikers and roller- bladers
to runners, walkers and picnickers, the park is a sanctuary
for residents and Denverites of all ages.
A special block in this lovely neighborhood, Old South Gaylord
Street, is home to one-of-a-kind specialty shops, service
businesses, restaurants and cafes.

Wash Park
Washington Park is over 100 years old. It hosts over 250
picnic permits per year and has many unique features such
as a 2.6-mile jogging path, the busiest recreation center
in Denver and 2 of the most flamboyant flower gardens in Denver.
It has several soccer fields, 2 playgrounds (1 handicap accessible),
1 basketball and roller blade court, 1 horseshoe court, 10
tennis courts and a lawn bowling green and 2 lakes.
Beautiful, wide-open spaces and two lakes dominate the landscape,
and an indoor pool and gym facilities at recently renovated
rec center are just some of the recreational opportunities
available. Tennis courts (on both sides of the south lake),
a massive playground and jogging paths provide additional
diversions. It's a fantasyland for in-line skaters and bicyclists
as well as gardening enthusiasts - the park's colorful flower
beds along Downing Street are some of Wash Park's best summer
features.
This is a terrific place to take in a free concert during
the summer (the Colorado Symphony plays here annually in June),
and to sneak a peek at the Denver Country Club's annual fireworks
display in July. The restored boathouse pavilion is available
to rent for special occasions. The after-work population swells
tremendously during good weather; come earlier if possible
to avoided being crowded out.
Plenty of shops plus restaurants offering nearly every type
of cuisine are nearby: to the east along Old South Gaylord
Street, and to the west on South Pearl Street.
